WaMu & Education
Washington Mutual's education programs are designed to improve the performance of K-12 public schools and promote financial literacy.
Financial Education
As part of our commitment to K-12 education, thousands of WaMu employees volunteer in schools to help kids learn about money using our WaMu Money Lessons kits. These fun and interactive lessons offer age-appropriate concepts about money and banking and are aligned with key national educational standards.
Cash Grants for Education
WaMu also gives millions of dollars each year to fund professional development of teachers and principals, and school improvement strategies. For detailed information about applying for grants, see our guidelines for charitable giving at http://www.wamu.com/corporategiving.
WaMoola for Schools®
The WaMoola for Schools® program is a special program created to support K-12 schools*. All Washington Mutual customers are asked to pick a school to support. Once they’ve enrolled into the program, they earn points for their designated school every time they use their Washington Mutual Debit MasterCard® for every day purchases like buying groceries, going to the movies, or buying a cup of coffee. Every purchase earns a point. At the end of the year, Washington Mutual will convert the points into a donation, and we’ll distribute the checks beginning the following year. Schools can use the money for whatever they need most, like books, repairs, improvements, or a special event. Washington Mutual imposes no spending guidelines or restrictions.
*This fundraising program is for K-12 public and private schools that have 501(c)(3) or 509 (a)(1) tax-exempt status, and that are located in the United States.
School Savings®
Started in 1923, the School Savings® program gives students hands-on lessons about how to handle money responsibly with their own Washington Mutual savings accounts. Our financial centers work with K-8 schools and parent volunteers to teach students positive savings habits through weekly Bank Days at school. Contact your local financial center for more information.
WaMoola for L.I.F.E. Lessons
This series of four classes for adults covers topics such as how to open and use a bank account, budgeting, getting loans and using credit.
High School Intern Program (HIP)
High school juniors and seniors get work experience, learn fundamental job skills and may earn academic credit while on the job at Washington Mutual. Interns may be eligible for regular employment with Washington Mutual after their internship.
